Walt Whitman

(1819-1892)

No "liberal arts education" is complete without an encounter with Leaves of Grass. But also, his essay Democratic Vistas is an important read because in its themes and images is the vocabularly and grammar for living democratically. Like his brother, Emerson, it is written in the voice of social prophecy and hope. More than any American writer, he is the bard and translator of human possibility and spirituality.
