Acknowledgements

The Abecedarian is the product of nearly 30 years of a life-long apprenticeship of participating and observing, teaching and being taught, and leading children, adolescents, and adults in schools and community settings.

 

My deepest and most profound gratitude to all of the Liberty/Bank Street Community, who, are either directly or indirectly represented here. It is programs like Liberty that we need to burnish and build onto with vigilance and rationality, to document what works. And to foreground the vital work of progressive education in dark and challenging times.

To my mother – Charlotte Penberg, life long proofreader, ghostwriter and nurturer of my intellectual life; to my father - Sam, whose wiles and determination in the market place allowed me to pursue the fruits of scholarship; and to my wife, Janelle, and our Goldens Gracie and Dollie, who renew for me the meaning of wholehearted living each day. 

 

And finally gratitude for everything I learned at the wooden tables in the kitchens of my grandparents.
